Here are some more conversions, sent in by Scott MacPhee of Moscow (Idaho). Here is his Curriculum Vitae:
Secondary Education and History student at the University of Idaho in Moscow, ID.
I've been modeling for about 5 years, but have not worked in 1/72 scale until about 5 months ago. Previously I worked exclusively in 1/35 scale.
Here's the good stuff. All Mr. MacPhee's comments are in quotes:
"In the hope of building a large diorama, I have painted over 300 ACW figures this year. Most of them are NOT conversions, but many are. I started by doing simple painting conversions - putting Union troops in butternut or gray and putting Confederate troops in blue. This quickly got old, and I was still stuck with the same few poses."
"Next I tried putting floppy hats on figures wearing kepis in order to make more authentic Rebels. I have found that ESCI's Confederate infantry have great hats for doing conversions. When I first started I
just exchanged heads, but quickly found that switching hats was easier. (This) is an example of a conversion using the ESCI floppy hats."
"I used this same method to create some soldiers from the Iron Brigade, all using the Hardee hat from one figure in Italeri's set of Union infantry. (This) shows some conversions using the Hardee hat from Italeri's set."
"Next I started to monkey around with the poses a bit. By changing arms, weapons, and even torsos, I created many unique figures. (This) shows some major conversions next to the original figures (original figures are on the left.)"
"The last thing I have tried is placing the figures in boiling water, bending their limbs, and placing them in ice water. This has allowed me to create many "casualty" soldiers, something of which there is an acute scarcity in 1:72 scale. (This) shows some hot-water conversions."
"(This) shows my most recent work, incorporating multiple conversion techniques. The officer is a stock figure from ESCI Confederates. The color bearer is an Accurate Union figure, and is only a painting conversion. The NCO is an Italeri Union Infantryman with one of those big, floppy ESCI hats and painted in Confederate butternut and gray. These are the result of four months of work in this scale and four days of work on the figures themselves."
