First released in 2001, set 8040 depicts the varied Italian warriors who fought during the age of the Punic Wars. The peoples of ancient Italy were far from uniform: some, including the Campanians and Oscans, fought in heavily equipped formations influenced by the Greek hoplite tradition, while Samnites, Lucanians and other hill peoples favoured more flexible tactics using javelins and looser formations. During Hannibal's invasion, many Italian communities joined Carthage against Rome, while others remained loyal to Rome or supplied troops to both sides. Brist's beautifully painted figures show the variety and colour that make these Italian allies such an interesting addition to any Punic War army.
