During the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, military surgeon Dominique-Jean Larrey helped transform battlefield medicine through the development of the ambulance volante, or “flying ambulance.” These light, horse-drawn vehicles were designed to move rapidly across the battlefield, allowing wounded soldiers to be collected and carried to medical treatment far sooner than had previously been possible. Inspired in part by the mobility of horse artillery, Larrey’s ambulance system became an important forerunner of modern battlefield evacuation. Set 8103 depicts one of these French light ambulances with its horse team and driver. Brist’s atmospheric scene shows the vehicle at work amid the aftermath of battle, bringing a rarely represented but essential aspect of Napoleonic warfare to life.
