Brist’s beautifully painted figures bring the variety of the Assyrian army vividly to life, from their distinctive armour and shields to their magnificent, luxuriant beards. Spearmen, archers and slingers pose on the rocky landscape carrying an impressive assortment of round and tall wicker shields. The rich red clothing, bronze armour and striking blue shields give each figure an individual character while tying the force together as a unified posse. The carefully arranged scene shows off both the range of poses and the wealth of detail contained in this unusual ancient subject.
