This is the story of our comrades battle against the Americans . The 17th Bayerische Infanterei Regt. held their ground and fought with courage and valor. This is their story ....
As the morning fog lifted and the sun beat down on our positions, we manned the trench lines, ready for the battle that lay ahead.
Our colonel walked slowly around our lines, encouraging the men and instilling a quiet sense of confidence and determination. This was to prove vital as the day unfolded.
Attack ! As if out of nowhere, the Americans emerged from the high ground and pushed forward to our wire. Our gunners were alert and ready for them, as were our riflemen.
The firing continued for what seemed like hours. The heavy machine gun kept the American's heads down. Then, as the colonel personally stepped forward to take charge, he ordered the men of the 17th to storm forward and counter-attack. With grenades and bayonets the Americans were finally halted. The wire had not been breached, but the Americans now new our strength and the locations of our gun groups .. what would tommorow bring ?
Hope you enjoyed. Next week - a report from the US 1st Division, AEF as they probe the German positions.
Many thank to Mr. O'Connor.
