These painted figures depict German cavalry of the First World War in their field-grey uniforms, still carrying the long lances that remained one of the most distinctive symbols of the mounted arm. At the outbreak of war, cavalry units were used for reconnaissance, screening and communications, as well as for pursuing or delaying enemy forces. Although trench warfare greatly reduced the opportunities for traditional mounted action on the Western Front, cavalry continued to serve throughout the war, particularly in the more open campaigns of Eastern Europe.

Mr. Horvath’s painting nicely captures the varied appearance of a mounted patrol, with the subdued uniforms contrasted against the horses and the tall lances giving the group an unmistakable silhouette.
