These painted figures depict German Uhlans of the First World War, recognisable by their distinctive Tschapka helmets and long cavalry lances. Originally intended for reconnaissance, screening and rapid movement ahead of the army, Uhlan regiments saw considerable mounted service during the mobile campaigns of 1914. As trench warfare developed, many cavalrymen increasingly served dismounted, although the lance and traditional uniform continued to give the Uhlans one of the most distinctive appearances in the German army.
Mr. Horvath’s painting brings out the character of the set particularly well, from the varied field-grey uniforms and colourful horses to the tall lances rising above the group. The front and rear views also show the wealth of equipment carried by these mounted soldiers and make an attractive record of the complete unit.
